BeyondChess™ Session Card

Coach's Clipboard — Every Session, Same Structure

1. PLAY

15 min
Just play. Walk around. Observe. Drop ONE word naturally.

2. PAUSE

5 min
Freeze boards. "What do you see?" Point out one pattern. Name it.

3. PLAY

15 min
Play again with new eyes. See if the named pattern shows up.

4. SCAN

5 min
The 3 questions. Read the body. Find the bump.

5. SEED

2 min
One CS sentence. Optional. If it fits, plant it. If not, skip.

THE PAUSE — Drill This Every Session

LOOK (what do I see?) → THINK (what are my options?) → CHECK (am I missing something?) → MOVE (commit) → RESET (breathe, see fresh)

The Body Scan (Step 4: SCAN)

1. What was FLOWING?

Which pieces worked together? Where was the rhythm smooth?

2. Where did it get STUCK?

Which move broke the flow? Where's the bump?

3. What's the BODY telling you?

Zoom out. Is your position healthy or suffocating?

The Rules

DO

  • Use their language. Meet them where they are.
  • "Your bishop is sleeping. Wake it up."
  • Let them PLAY most of the time
  • Point things out — don't lecture
  • One vocabulary word per session
  • Let the kid's reaction tell you if it landed

DON'T

  • Dump philosophy or terminology
  • Force the CS connection if it doesn't fit
  • Explain more than one concept
  • "The center maximizes degrees of freedom"
  • Talk more than you listen
  • Correct — ask. "What do YOU see?"

Vocabulary Progression (build over time)

Phase 1 (Weeks 1-10): Read the Parts
body — anything with parts working together
center — the quiet middle with the most reach
prime — a piece's unique superpower
firmware — the program that runs automatically
Phase 2 (Weeks 11-20): Read the Connections
connected — pieces working together = strong
membrane — the wall that decides what gets in
flow — when everything moves smoothly
bump — where flow gets stuck
Phase 3 (Weeks 21-30): Read the Flow
rhythm — the pattern that repeats
breathe — inhale → pause → exhale → rest
O > I — give more than you take
¬F — don't force it
Phase 4-5 (Weeks 31-50): Read the Whole / Read Anything
inside / outside — zoom in to parts, zoom out to the whole
reading — seeing what's happening in any system

Today's Session

L = (O > I) + P + ¬F
